I had heard of Stavely Nature Reserve near BoroughBridge quite a few times and it was a place I had wanted to visit – apart from being a smart reserve it was also a great place to see Otters!!! Hearing there were 3 otters seen only last Friday a trip was organised. Unfortunately no otters were seen; to much to expect for a first visit!!! But it was great to be outside in such lovely weather – cold yes, but not a cloud in the sky  – a great day for some photography and birding!!! We had great views of many woodland species and the feeders were rammed with Reed Bunting, Tree Sparrows and at least 4 species of Tit; including; Great, Blue, Long-tailed and Coal. The birds were very confiding and had a great session – and on the lagoon there were a nice collection of duck – including at least 5 female Goldeneye, which are always nice to see. However, pride of place must go to a Water Rail. At first it was seen skulking the undergrowth, but after some tense waiting it showed really well. But it was always nervous, retreating very quickly into dense cover as soon as it felt threatened. I had had several earlier attempts in the Autumn of photographing this species but failed miserably. To top off the day we had a  ‘fly- past’ Sparrowhawk that certainly created panic at the feeders – but far to quick for a photograph. A big thank you to Graham for the heads up – and next time hopefully we can see the otters!!!
