7th Nov: It was great to hear on the local Twitter feed that some early Waxwings had been found on the Eastgate Industrial Estate near Seamer, just east of Scarborough… Here’s a question : Why are Waxwings always found in one of the following places;
A A housing estate
B Shopping complex
C An industrial estate
Anyways the Twitch was on!!! Not a bad run through to Seamer – and the signs looked good when I got there with lots of people, with lots of cameras pointing towards a big Mountain Ash!! And indeed there it was… a lone Waxwing with its punk hairstyle at the top of the aforementioned tree…. and it got better another bird was found in the tree feeding on the berries.If only all twitches were as easy as this!! I spent a couple of hours photographing and watching these enigmatic winter visitors from Scandinavia. Everybody was hoping they might be the advance guard of a Waxwing invasion this winter. Last year’s winter was just to mild and the birds stayed put in Sweden, Norway and Finland. So hopefully the winter weather this year will be much colder in order to ‘push’ more of these beautiful visitors across the North Sea.
